The ranch, was not really a real ranch, and I only saw one horse and no cowboys! As per its name, this was a crawfish boil, and there were thousands of crawfish getting cooked up in what essentially was the back of a truck. The men would then shovel cooked crawfish into the serving dishes. The size of a portion was obscene, not only did you get crawfish, but also some pieces of catfish and rice. We helped ourselves to sauces, which included horseradish - interesting combination, but it was tasty.
I think I managed quarter of my crawfish. The mess trying to peel them was awful. The hard shell on their tails was much more difficult to peel off than prawns. My lack of apatite was probably because I was being lazy and could not be bothered to peel them myself. Slightly off putting, was the mud that was still caught between their legs. Apparently, they are bottom feeders - oh yum!
The day was a really good thing for families and there must have been well over 500 people. There was a bouncy castle, face painters, with a monkey (!), crazy golf, volley ball and lots more for the kids. In the inside barn there was a band playing Louisiana blues - well that is what it sounded like to me.
We ended up having a long conversation about curry, trying to establish if there was anywhere in Houston that does a good curry. I think the verdict is still out on that! But since I had curry on the mind, I decided to cook a chicken curry this evening. It was good, but seriously missing all our cupboard full of spices back home! Anyway, I am going to be eating for the rest of the week no doubt, the joys of cooking for one!
I stopped off for a swim on the way home and went to HEB, the cheaper food shop, more on par with Asda back home. It was a bit like Asda now I think about it. I got a fair amount for my money, but I still prefer Randell's!
